Public Relations

Despite its reputation, public relations is not all champagne and air kisses. It is a challenging job that can assist business in many ways and involves more than just writing press releases, including brand development, crisis communications, event management and social media.

Photography has always been a strong passion and while my formal training in this area is not extensive, I have worked hard over the years to develop and refine my skills. I own several different camera from pin holes through to digital SLRs and taking pictures is an almost-daily occurrence.

Breaking News!

Working as a breaking news reporter exposed me to a variety of professional challenges and rewarding experiences. Oil spills, house fires, bomb scares, street brawls, protests, plane crashes and political scandals were just some of the events that I helped convey to the general public.

All things digital

28.11.2009 0

What do chocolate and taking your pants off in public have in common?  They’re both examples of successful digitally integrated campaigns, presented earlier this month at the Digital Marketing and Media Summit in Melbourne.  It was great to see so many agencies turning to the web to engage with consumers and promote their clients’ brands.

There were a few case studies of note, including the Freddo Frog online game and the iSpyLevis Twitter campaign.

Some other highlights included an overview of the multimedia-rich and interactive Blackmores website, showing that even a vitamin company can provide a genuine experience for its customers.  Sony’s intricate campaign surrounding the launch of Bond film Casino Royale was interesting, but very complex.

It was mostly marketing and creative types in the room, both agency and in-house, but it was still relevant to public relations.  Although it was interesting the only PR speaker seemed to be quite negative about the point of social media.

Australian Journalism Review

I was working full-time during my final semester of university and the head of school agreed to let me undertake an independent research project in lieu of a communications course.  The thesis was about young journalists in a modern newsroom and scored me a high distinction, but was also put forward to the Australian Journalism Review.

They published it!  It came out in their most recent journal and is titled Shaken Not Stirred. I’m pretty chuffed to say the least.

Hi there, and thanks for visiting.  My name is Shannon Molloy.  I am a writer, amateur photographer, travel enthusiast and tragic fan of 90s pop music. I am also a former journalist turned public relations professional living in Brisbane, Australia.

I love this city.  It’s young, honest, eager and beautiful.  You can feel excitement in the air – Brisbane is changing.  I’ve wanted to live here my entire life, and here I am.  Sure, I won’t stay forever… but while I do, I’m getting the most out of it and exploring its amazing potential.

But I’ll get to that later.  For now, let me explain what I’m doing.  This website was born on a weekend when I was recovering from food poisoning.  Too sick to leave the house, but well enough to be bored.  It is an online space dedicated to my evolving career.

This site, I hope, will become a place where I can display my professional highlights and achievements, as well as my passions and dreams.  It’s something I have wanted to create for some time.  This is the start, and very much a work in progress, so I hope you’ll stick around and watch it grow.
